A man was asked to share some of his deepest fears; one of them was the fear of not being a good father. What is a good father? We all have different answers. I would like to think that I am a good father, but only my wife and children can answer that. My idea of a good father is one who knows his heavenly Father and learns to imitate him in his life. He ensures that his children also know their heavenly Father and that they are grounded and rooted in their faith and grow up in the fear of the Lord.
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.”
One of the things I always tell my children is that first and foremost, I am their father and secondly their friend. What I mean by this is, as their father, I have to provide for them to make sure that they are educated and to discipline them when they do wrong. As their friend, I need to communicate with them. As men, we do not always know how to communicate with our children, simply because we want to always speak, but not listen. We need to listen to what our children are saying. Many times what they are saying is not important to us, but it is important to them. So please listen to your children. We also need to respect them as individuals. We tend to think that children should be seen, but not heard. If we continue to think like this, especially during this age and time, they will turn to others who will listen, but who will probably guide them in the wrong direction, such as to joining gangs, taking drugs, alcohol and criminal activities. Know what your children are doing at all times. Know who they are keeping company with. Communication is important in any relationship. As fathers, we need not only show our children that we love them, we need to tell them. Many times we take for granted that they know, but it is important for us to say it. Now, to you wives and mothers, I would like to encourage you to support your husbands and the fathers of your children. Not only on Fathers’ day but every day. Continue praying for them that they will be good fathers and be there for their children. Children, Matthew 15:4 says, “For God commmanded, saying honour your father and your mother.” Listen to your fathers and respect them even though you do not always agree with what they sayThey are your earthly fathers, who love and care for you and want the best for you.
On this Fathers’ Day, it is my prayer that we will all strive to be good fathers and good examples to our children.
