Fathers’ Day: Celebrated on every third Sunday in June, Fathers’ Day originated in Spokane, Washington (USA). A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea as she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Since her father raised her, she saw it quite fitting to honour fathers like hers, who was both a ‘mother’ and ‘father’ to her. She lovingly described her father as (1) One who portrays great courage; (2) One who is not selfish; and (3), One who expresses and gives unconditional love. Sonora therefore decided to publicly honour her own father Henry Jackson Dodd on his following birthday on June 19, 1910. Fathers’ Day was celebrated in the state of Washington ever since and eventually caught on throughout the United States and the rest of the Western Hemisphere in 1924. So every Sunday closest to June 19th is designated Fathers’ Day.
As we enjoy this celebration of fathers, we must always be aware that a Virtuous Male Provider must mirror the qualities of God. God in His omnipotence (supremacy) exhibited wisdom as The Father; redemption as The Son; and comfort as The Holy Spirit. Those of us who are fathers must do the same. Fathers must:
· Impart wisdom to their children to nature their development
· Redeem or rescue their children from sinful or harmful situations
· Comfort their children when life becomes overwhelming
Therefore, fathers must have qualities that are simultaneously tough and gentle if they are to align themselves with the Triune nature of God. As a result, Fathers all over the world must be a PILLAR as well as a PILLOW of strength to their (extended) families: Being a ‘pillar’ of strength means that they must be strong in disciplining offspring and others in their care; supportive of their families; and above all, upright in enforcing and living up to the values and ways of God. Being a ‘pillow’ of strength means those fathers should be the ones who bring soothing relief and proper nurturing in tough, rocky or hard conditions, just as a pillow cushions or brings relief to an aching head.
God is calling all you Fathers because the Home, the Church, the Schools & the Society at large desperately need you!
